Our world is changing rapidly as we face the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While there are many unknowns, one thing I do know: as men and women of faith, we were made for this. In this life, there will be trouble, but the words that Jesus spoke to encourage his disciples still ring true today. We have access to the same power that raised Jesus from the grave. The power to overcome fear and anxiety. The power to hold on to hope in the midst of adversity.
WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER
Even in this season of “social distancing”, there’s a unique sense of unity. We may not be able to gather physically, but we are in this together…all of us. We all are dealing with very possibly the same things: isolation, fear, anxiety, concern about finances, wondering about the future of our jobs, adjusting expectations, trying to establish new rhythms when nothing feels normal. It’s a lot!
As you’re aware, our church, school and preschool buildings are closed until further notice. But let me be clear…the physical doors may be closed, but the church never closes. Why? Because YOU are the church! The church isn’t a place or a program, the church is a people, united to share the LOVE OF JESUS! So, the work of the church goes on!
STAYING CONNECTED
As a staff, we’re working diligently to provide ways to stay connected so that we all stay spiritually connected and strong in this new season. We’ve moved our Sunday services online, and we’re taking our small groups to a digital format using Zoom. We’ve already done Zoom Groups for ladies and men, and more are on the horizon. We’d love for you to let us know what topics you’d like to discuss.
Now is the perfect time to follow us on social media – @wearecathedral – and get our app. It’s a great way to stay connected and access our updates and resources for you and your children.
BEING THE CHURCH
As I said earlier, the work of the church will go on during this challenging time. We’ve created a Coronavirus Response page on our website. You’ll find ways you can help during this time.
Our Lowcountry Hope Center remains open as we continue to serve hundreds of families in need. A critical need right now is for volunteers to assist with food distribution, as much of our current volunteer base here is in the high-risk age category (over 60). You can get more information and sign-up here.
LOVE GOD, LOVE PEOPLE, CHOOSE JOY
Let me encourage you in just a few more ways:
- Start your day with the Word instead of the news. My first go-to passage each morning is Psalm 91.
- Spend time in worship.
- Make a Gratitude List. Write down what you’re thankful for…family, friends, church, etc.
- Sow some good seed. Be generous. Be kind to those who are serving us in grocery stores and pharmacies and restaurant drive-throughs.
- Pray, pray, pray! For protection, for healing for those who are sick, for our healthcare professionals, for our first responders, for those in authority making decisions, etc.
- Reach out and encourage others! Your voice matters. You are a carrier of hope. Shine brightly!
SEE YOU SUNDAY
I look forward to being with you for church online at 11 am this Sunday as we continue building our “Hope in the Midst of Crisis”. There may be long days ahead, but I believe God has some important strategies for us to not just survive, but to thrive.
