Note from Mike – You Belong

October 12, 2017

This Is US

I’m so excited about where we are as a church! The atmosphere of worship is so incredible! Over 200 people have become Christ followers in the last two weeks, and we have over 700 people in small groups!

I cannot tell you how thrilling it is to have this kind of momentum going as we enter our 30th year of ministry! This really comes as no surprise if you understand the meaning of 30. The number 30 in Hebrew was written as the letter ‘lāmed’ (ל), which is literally an ox goad or staff. Thus, it was a symbol of authority, leadership, or rulership.

30 is also the number of dedication for rulership. It was the age which God established as the age of rulership for priests (Numbers 4:23). Joseph was elevated to power at the age of 30, as we read in Genesis 41:46. Reminds me of my high school graduation song, “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Cathedral…fasten your seatbelts!!! We’re just entering the beginning of a season of authority, leadership and rulership that will launch us into our greatest days ahead!!!

By the way, I encourage you to join us Saturday evenings from 6-7pm in the worship center as we pray for our Sunday services. We also pray over the thousands of people on our Top Ten lists, and the prayer requests of our congregation. Prayer really does change things!

You Belong. That short phrase offers hope, strength, and courage to conquer any obstacle in life. I recently read a book and the author made a statement that leapt from the pages and struck me — “Find your people, and you’ll find your purpose.” So discovering my purpose is tied to…discovering my people. In other words, where I belong. One phrase I hear repeatedly when I ask people to describe their first impression of Cathedral is, “I feel like I am home.” In the book of Acts, we see a wonderful description of a group of people who found where they belong.

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. Acts 2:46

Look at that verse and words begin to rise off the page — worship, share, joy, generosity, praise, goodwill, and fellowship. It’s a picture of a group of people who found where they belong, and in doing so, developed an atmosphere that was so attractive, it drew people with incredible intensity. Here at Cathedral, we have a phrase for this kind of belonging. We call it…Doing Life Together.

On Sunday, November 12 we’ll celebrate 30 years of Doing Life Together. That’s 30 years of people coming to Cathedral, touching the Spirit of God, finding freedom, and realizing they belong. After services, the celebration will spill over to the athletic fields where we will have lunch together.

I’ll see you Sunday! Because…You Belong!
