December 1, 2017
And so it begins.
With one tick of the second hand, we’re full on into December. Counting up to Christmas! Making lists, checking them twice, beginning new traditions and carrying on old ones.
What is it that Christmas awakens in our hearts? The season can evoke the whole spectrum of emotions – from joy, wonder, and excitement to sadness, grief and longing. There’s a lot to manage, personally and relationally.
I often think about what all comes together during the Christmas season. The past and future colliding in one glorious and often messy, precious present.
And I think about the first Christmas. The longings of previous generations, the promises, the prophecies – all coming together in one moment that sets in motion a chain of events that will change the trajectory for every future generation.
These lyrics from the carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” always move me:
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight – what a powerful line! The physical expression of the heart of God and His incredible love for His children comes to planet Earth as a baby in a manger.
Jesus – Emmanuel – God with us.
I’m so looking forward to this Christmas season as we celebrate each week, unwrapping the gifts of the season and enjoying His presence together.
As I close, I ask you to think of four or five family members or friends who would benefit from joining you in this Christmas season. Take a risk. Make the invitation! Who knows what God might do?
See you Sunday!
